Police have launched an investigation into the killing of Arise News anchor Somtochukwu Christelle Maduagwu, who died during a robbery attack at her residence in Katampe, Abuja, in the early hours of Monday.

Maduagwu, 29, was a lawyer-turned-broadcaster who worked as an anchor, reporter and producer with AriseTV News Channel.

She joined the station as a rising voice in journalism, known for her professionalism and passion for storytelling.

Her death was confirmed in a statement on Monday by the management of Arise News, which described her as “a vibrant voice that engaged and connected with our viewers” and “a cherished member of the Arise News family.”

The statement, signed by Hadiza Usman-Ajayi on behalf of management, said: “Sommie tragically passed away in the early hours of Monday, September 29, 2025, following an armed robbery incident in her residence in Katampe area of Abuja that is being investigated by the Nigeria Police.

Sommie’s voice is now silent but her spirit, passion and legacy will endure as part of our collective memory.”

Tributes have poured in from colleagues, viewers, journalists and members of the legal community who knew her.

Security sources confirmed that the incident has renewed concerns about insecurity in the Federal Capital Territory.

Sad news but the Police investigation into Sommie’s death is absolutely necessary. A similar killing happened few years ago in Abuja of a popular chef but after in-depth Police investigation, something more sinister was discovered.

Honestly, I wept until the wee hours of this morning for the wicked robbers to have cut short the promising life of such a young girl just like that. I pray GOD consoles us all in JESUS Name, AMEN! I agree with you that thorough investigation must be carried out; with detailed information provided to all Nigerians.
