PRESIDENT BOLA Tinubu has expressed his condolences to the entertainment industry, the Imo State Government, and the fans of the late Nigerian musical icon, Onyeka Onwenu.

Tinubu praised Onwenu’s numerous artistic contributions, highlighting her collaboration with King Sunny Ade on the 1980s family planning campaign song, “Wait for Me.”

The President also celebrated Onwenu’s versatile talents and her ability to bring joy and laughter through her work.

He noted that her 1990s hit, “One Love,” fostered a spirit of fellowship and harmony.

He prayed for her soul’s repose and hoped she finds peace where “the music never fades.”

Hers Sons Lament and Appreciate

The late Onyeka Onwenu’s sons, Abraham and Tijani Ogunlende, announced her passing on Tuesday, July 30, 2024.

They said their mother collapsed after a performance and was taken to Reddington Hospital in Lagos, where she later died.

The Ogunlende brothers expressed gratitude to those who supported them during their mother’s final moments, including Governor Alex Otti and Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi.

In their statement, they described their mother as a “national treasure” and a “legend” whose impact on music, acting, and humanitarian efforts inspired generations.

They thanked the public and specific individuals for their concern and support.

President Tinubu called Onwenu a “versatile and extremely gifted artiste” whose legacy lives on in her music and artistic expressions.

Born on January 31, 1952, in Obosi, Anambra State, Onwenu died at the age of 72.
