US Congressman Says Nigeria Agrees on Steps to Strengthen Security

By Jemimah Wellington, JKNewsMedia Correspondent

SECURITY DISCUSSIONS dominated the agenda in Abuja as a visiting United States (US) congressional delegation met with Nigeria’s National Security Adviser, Nuhu Ribadu, to examine steps for strengthening nationwide protection.

The US Congressman, Riley Moore described the meetings as focused on practical actions put forward by Nigerian officials.

The delegation’s visit aimed to assess Nigeria’s security situation and ongoing efforts to address threats across the country. Mr. Moore had previously criticised the Nigerian government for not doing enough to protect Christians and repeatedly claimed there was a Christian genocide in Nigeria.

His claims had been challenged by Nigerian authorities and local and international organisations, who stated that the insecurity in the country could not be described as a genocide against any group or religion.

Following the Abuja meetings, Mr. Moore said discussions produced “concrete steps and actions” examined at length with Mr Ribadu and other officials. He added that full execution of the proposed measures would enhance security for all Nigerians.

Describing the talks as “productive and positive,” Mr. Moore said both sides agreed on actionable measures to disrupt extremist networks and improve protection for vulnerable communities.

He highlighted the recent rescue of 100 abducted Catholic schoolchildren in Niger State, calling it “a clear sign of increasing responsiveness and capability.”

Addressing earlier claims of a Christian genocide, the Congressman stated that the narrative pushed by some advocacy groups abroad was “misleading and inconsistent with realities on the ground.”

He noted that insights from the Abuja meetings shaped his updated position.

According to Mr. Moore, discussions included identifying areas for cooperation to weaken extremist activity, enhance intelligence-sharing, and reinforce community-level security responses.

He emphasised the importance of building on frameworks already in place to ensure broader protection for Nigerians of all backgrounds.

In a post on X, Mr. Moore stressed that committing to the agreed steps would play a crucial role in improving conditions.

While he did not provide details of the specific measures, he said they addressed challenges facing communities affected by different forms of violence.

The delegation’s visit affirmed continued international attention on Nigeria’s security landscape. Mr. Moore framed the meetings as an opportunity to assess operational realities and commit to measures targeting groups responsible for attacks in affected regions.

He said the exchanges offered clarity on ongoing initiatives and future plans, presenting a comprehensive picture of the Nigerian government’s security posture.

Concluding the visit, Mr. Moore reaffirmed the need to translate discussions into concrete actions.

He emphasised that enhanced protection for all Nigerians remained the central focus and that adherence to the outlined steps would be key to advancing that objective.
