A SECOND explosion has occurred at another key installation in Rivers State barely an hour after the first, intensifying concerns over security threats in the region.
The incidents, occurring in Gokana and Ogba/Egbema/Ndoni Local Government Areas (LGAs), have prompted heightened vigilance among authorities and residents.
The first explosion took place late on Monday at the Shell Petroleum Development Company (SPDC)
, situated at the border of Kpor and Bodo communities in Gokana LGA.
Eyewitnesses reported a powerful blast, causing significant structural damage.
The Rivers State Police Command confirmed an ongoing investigation to ascertain the cause of the explosion.
Police spokesperson Grace Iringe-Koko disclosed that two individuals had been taken in for questioning in connection to the incident.
However, no official statement has yet been released regarding possible motives or suspects.
Shortly after, a second explosion struck an oil facility in Okwawriwa, Ogba/Egbema/Ndoni LGA, in the early hours of Tuesday.
The affected manifold—an essential supply link to Imo State and Brass in Bayelsa State—is jointly operated by Seplat, Agip, and Shell.
While no casualties have been reported, the blast inflicted significant infrastructural damage, raising further security concerns.
Residents and industry stakeholders have expressed unease, fearing coordinated sabotage.
Speculation suggests that criminal elements may be responsible, but law enforcement has yet to confirm any links between the two incidents.
Security operatives have been deployed to affected areas, while oil regulators and government authorities urge vigilance to mitigate further threats.
Meanwhile, the police command has not issued an official statement regarding the ONELGA explosion.
