GHANA’s FOREIGN Affairs Minister, Shirley Ayorkor Botchwey, has been chosen as the Commonwealth’s new Secretary-General during a pivotal 2024 Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting in Apia, Samoa.

Botchwey, widely endorsed by the African Union (AU), emerged as the seventh Secretary-General, succeeding Baroness Patricia Scotland, who completes her term at the end of 2024.

Her candidacy was strengthened by her extensive diplomatic tenure since 2017 and a reputation for advancing African regional cooperation through her leadership in ECOWAS.

Botchwey’s election marks Africa’s return to the Commonwealth’s leadership, a milestone not reached since Nigeria’s Chief Emeka Anyaoku held the role.

She campaign for the post included extensive outreach, sharing her vision for equitable trade, reparation initiatives, and advancing democratic values among member nations.

As part of her agenda, she supports dialogue on reparative justice, urging discussions for financial and moral acknowledgment of colonial legacies.

This stance aligns with broader calls from African, Caribbean, and Pacific leaders who are urging Britain to address the legacy of slavery and make amends.

During the summit, Bahamas Prime Minister Philip Davis emphasized the necessity of reparatory justice as “a real dialogue about how we address these historical wrongs.”

The meeting, presided over by King Charles III, became a forum for addressing the wounds of colonialism and the slave trade, with Botchwey affirming the need for a fair path forward for all member states.

King Charles acknowledged the painful past but encouraged delegates to “reject the language of division” while expressing a commitment to rectifying persisting inequalities.

Botchwey’s new role as Secretary-General brings her mandate to steer the Commonwealth through critical issues, including climate action, democratic governance, and economic inclusivity.
