NOT LONG after recent attacks on military bases in Borno State, terrorists have killed a Nigerian Army commanding officer and six soldiers in Monguno following an overnight assault on a military formation that troops repelled.

JKNewsMedia.com reports that the Nigerian military said troops of Sector 3 under the Joint Task Force (North-East) Operation HADIN KAI (OPHK) came under attack on Sunday night at the Charlie 13 location in Monguno.

The assailants launched the assault on troops, prompting a fierce gun battle.

Sani Uba, media information officer of the North-East Joint Task Force, said in a statement on Monday that the soldiers repelled the attack and forced the terrorists to retreat while maintaining control of the area despite the fierce assault.

According to the statement, the commanding officer later proceeded to the troops’ location to assess the situation and encountered an improvised explosive device.

The explosion severely damaged his vehicle, leading to his death alongside six soldiers.

“His actions, even after the immediate threat had been neutralised, reflected the highest traditions of military leadership; courage, selfless service, and leading from the front,” the statement reads.

“His willingness to move towards the troops in the heat of the battle, despite the prevailing danger, stands as a profound testament to his valour, sense of duty, and unwavering commitment to the welfare and operational effectiveness of his men.”

Operation HADIN KAI said it deeply mourns the loss of the officer and other personnel who paid the supreme price in service to the nation. “Their sacrifice will forever remain etched in the memory of the Armed Forces and the grateful nation they served,” it said.

The incident occurred on April 12, 2026, shortly after troops came under the attack in Monguno.

JKNewsMedia.com reports that the Defence Headquarters said terrorists had recently attacked a military base in Benisheikh, Borno State, killing two soldiers and two officers, including Brigadier General Oseni Braimah of the 29 Brigade, while “making the ultimate sacrifice in the defence of the Federal Republic of Nigeria”.
