LEGAL PRACTICAL, litigation staff, court registrars and other personnel have been directed to stop using the title “Barrister” as a prefix to their names in all official dealings with the Supreme Court of Nigeria (SCN) with immediate effect.
JKNewsMedia.com reports that the directive was conveyed in a memorandum dated July 13, 2026, signed by the Chief Registrar of the Supreme Court, Kabir E. Akanbi, on the instruction of the Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice Kudirat Kekere Ekun.
According to the memorandum, the use of the title “Barrister” before a person’s name is considered inconsistent with the level of professionalism expected in communications and official records of the Supreme Court.
“I am directed by the Honourable the Chief Justice of Nigeria to notify all Litigation Staff, Legal Practitioners, Court Registrars, and Lawyers that the use of the title ‘Barrister’ as a prefix to names is inappropriate and inconsistent with the standards of professionalism expected within the Supreme Court of Nigeria,” the memorandum stated.
Supreme Court’s statement said the directive takes immediate effect and applies to all official correspondence, court records, legal documents, identity materials and every other form of official engagement with the Supreme Court.
