PROMPT PAYMENTS to contractors has been described as driving the swift execution of road projects across Delta State, as the government maintains its focus on delivering quality infrastructure.
Governor Sheriff Oborevwori’s administration has prioritised the timely settlement of project bills to ensure efficiency and build trust with contractors.
During an inspection of ongoing road works in Sapele, including the Okirighwre-Benin Road, Okirighwre-Amukpe Road, Shell Road Extension, and Hausa Road Extension, Commissioner for Works (Rural Roads) and Public Information, Mr Charles Aniagwu, stated that the government does not owe contractors.
He added that this policy reflects the administration’s commitment to ensuring that all projects are completed on schedule and to high standards.
“We are mobilising contractors and paying for completed works immediately. This approach strengthens the partnership between the government and contractors, ensuring both sides meet their obligations.
“Our role is to represent the people of Delta, and theirs is to deliver quality projects as per the specifications,” Aniagwu said.
The commissioner revealed that some corrections had been instructed in areas where contractors had failed to meet engineering standards.
He added that contractors have been directed to rectify such issues promptly, with some aspects of drainage work marked for demolition and reconstruction.
Inspecting the sites alongside the Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, Festus Ahon, Aniagwu commended property owners along the project routes for cooperating with the government.
He stressed that their support has been instrumental in facilitating smooth construction and expansion activities.
Governor Oborevwori, through his administration, has reiterated that quality will not be compromised, even in the face of friendships or partnerships.
Aniagwu noted, “The Governor has made it clear that on no account will we sacrifice quality for expediency. We have cautioned contractors and supervising teams to adhere strictly to the engineering standards outlined in the Bill of Engineering Measurement.”
He further reflected that the government’s investment in rural road infrastructure is part of a broader strategy to boost economic activities, connect communities, and improve the standard of living across Delta State.
The projects under inspection, Aniagwu also noted, represent the administration’s commitment to fulfilling campaign promises and addressing the needs of the public.
Government representatives from regulatory agencies, community leaders, and local stakeholders were also present during the inspections.
They lauded the administration for its transparency, proactive measures, and visible progress in infrastructure development across the state.
