SOME NIGERIAN professionals are noted to be making waves globally as six distinguished scientists and engineers of Nigerian descent have been honoured among 400 recipients of the prestigious Presidential Early Career Award for Scientists and Engineers (PECASE) in the United States.
President Joe Biden announced the awardees on 14 January 2025, recognising their outstanding contributions to science, technology, and engineering.
The PECASE, established in 1996 by former President Bill Clinton, represents the highest honour given by the U.S. government to early-career scientists and engineers.
This year’s recipients are employed or funded by 14 participating U.S. government agencies, with the Nigerian honourees standing out for their groundbreaking work.
Among the honourees are Azeez Butali, Gilbert Lilly Endowed Professor of Diagnostic Sciences at the University of Iowa’s College of Dentistry; Ijeoma Opara, Associate Professor of Public Health at Yale School of Public Health; and Oluwatomi Akindele, a postdoctoral researcher at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory.
Also recognised are Eno Ebong, Associate Professor of Chemical Engineering, Bioengineering, and Biology at Northeastern University; Oluwasanmi Koyejo, Assistant Professor of Computer Science at Stanford University; and Abidemi Ajiboye, Executive Vice Chair of the Case School of Engineering’s Department of Biomedical Engineering at Case Western Reserve University.
President Bola Tinubu congratulated the honourees for their remarkable achievements, describing their recognition as a testament to the vast potential of Nigerians to excel both at home and abroad.
He expressed optimism that their expertise would contribute significantly to Nigeria’s development under his Renewed Hope Agenda.
Tinubu highlighted the multidisciplinary nature of their achievements, ranging from groundbreaking research in artificial intelligence to innovations in public health and biomedical engineering.
He commended their role in advancing the frontiers of knowledge and contributing solutions to global challenges.
The award also signifies the strength of Nigeria’s intellectual community, reaffirming the ability of its citizens to make impactful contributions to international science and technology.
Tinubu called on the honourees to continue serving as role models and ambassadors of excellence, while sharing their knowledge to drive growth and innovation back home.
This recognition serves as an inspiration for young Nigerians aiming to pursue careers in science and engineering, showcasing that their aspirations can lead to global impact.
