ROYAL GRATITUDE has met President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s decision to establish the South-West Development Commission (SWDC), with the Ooni of Ife, Arole Oduduwa Olofin Adimula, Ooni Adeyeye Enitan Ogunwusi, CFR, praising the move as a bold and visionary step towards regional advancement.

The monarch, who serves as Permanent Chairman of the Southern Nigeria Traditional Rulers Council, extended heartfelt appreciation to the President for selecting individuals of tested integrity to lead the Commission’s affairs.

At the forefront of his commendation was the appointment of Dr Charles ‘Diji Akinola as the Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of the SWDC—an endorsement the Ooni described as both historic and strategic for the South West’s development agenda.

Describing Dr Akinola as a distinguished technocrat with a rich legacy of service, the Ooni highlighted his extensive background in public-private partnerships, rural enterprise, and international cooperation.

He urged the new MD to bring his wealth of expertise to bear in tackling the region’s infrastructural and socio-economic challenges.

Also commended was the choice of Senator Olu Adetunmbi as Chairman of the SWDC Board.

The Ooni praised the full list of appointees, including Hon. Princess Nike Omoworare, Bolaji Ariyo, Joseph Olugbenga, Olumuyiwa Olabimtan, Adewinle Martins, Ibrahim Olaifa, Kabiru Lakwaya, retired General Abdul Adamu, Arinola Fagbemi, Ukoha Onyekwere,

Howell Ihenacho, Olugbenga Olufehinti, Tele Ogunjobi, Funmilayo Tejuosho, Fatai Ibikunle and Lateef Ajijola, calling them “round pegs in round holes.”

He gave special mention to the inclusion of two prominent Osun indigenes—Dr Akinola and Hon. Omoworare—stating that their elevation reflects both merit and the President’s sensitivity to the region’s aspirations.

Dr Akinola’s previous role as Chief of Staff to the Governor of Osun State was cited as further evidence of his readiness for the SWDC leadership.

According to a statement issued by Otunba Moses Olafare, Director of Media and Public Affairs at the Ooni’s Palace, Ile-Ife, the Ooni lauded the appointments as signifying President Tinubu’s commitment to inclusive governance and meaningful development in the South-West.

He expressed strong confidence in the board’s capacity to address ecological challenges, regional security, and infrastructure needs while promoting sustainability and prosperity.

Encouraging unity and focus, the monarch called on all members of the Oduduwa race to support the Commission’s goals with dedication and integrity.

He further urged traditional institutions, state authorities, and civil society actors to join in backing the SWDC’s mission to transform the South-West into a beacon of economic progress and cultural revival.
