THE FEDERAL Government has renewed its assurance to protect longstanding diplomatic ties with the United States (US) and the United Arab Emirates (UAE), following recent visa issuance policy adjustments affecting Nigerian citizens.
High-level engagements are underway to address the developments, as relevant ministries and agencies intensify efforts through constructive and appropriate diplomatic channels.
The US Government formally stated that the visa review stems from two key concerns: increasing rates of visa overstays by Nigerian nationals and the need for better access to individual records.
The decision, it clarified, aligns with Washington’s broader global visa reciprocity review, a process that regularly evaluates entry limits and visa validity timelines.
Reacting, President Bola Tinubu has directed all federal agencies to meet Nigeria’s international commitments while bolstering cooperation with foreign governments to verify the identities of Nigerians seeking consular services.
He also urged citizens living abroad to adhere strictly to the immigration laws of their host countries and preserve the credibility of their residency privileges.
On the issue of transit visa issuance for Nigerians by the UAE, Nigerian authorities report no official notification of a revised policy.
However, current visa processing is said to be proceeding in an orderly fashion.
The FG said it remains in open dialogue with UAE officials and appreciates what it described as a continued constructive engagement.
The Tinubu administration also reaffirmed its commitment to securing fair and dignified treatment for Nigerians across global borders under its 4-D Foreign Policy agenda, which includes a strong focus on the rights and welfare of Nigerians in the diaspora.
President Tinubu also expressed his administration’s intent to deepen bilateral partnerships with both the United States and the United Arab Emirates through mutual respect and responsible diplomacy.
