FREE HEALTHCARE access for low-income retirees under the Contributory Pension Scheme will be implemented without delay, following a directive by President Bola Tinubu, who described the move as essential to upholding dignity and social protection in retirement.
The instruction was issued after the President received a policy update from the Director General of the National Pension Commission (PenCom), Ms Omolola Oloworaran.
During the briefing, Tinubu also mandated urgent enforcement of the long-overdue pension increases and the introduction of a minimum pension guarantee, describing both measures as vital safeguards for the most vulnerable under the CPS.
The President further directed the Commission to resolve without delay the protracted challenges affecting the police pension system.
According to the President, officers who serve and protect the nation must be guaranteed peace of mind and dignity at the end of their service.
PenCom boss briefed the President on strategies to shield pension funds from inflation and macroeconomic shocks, including planned reforms to preserve asset value amid rising economic pressures.
She said the Commission also outlined efforts to broaden the scheme’s global footprint by allowing Nigerians in the diaspora to make foreign currency contributions, a move expected to deepen coverage and participation.
President Tinubu expressed strong backing for the Commission’s reform agenda, reiterating his administration’s commitment to inclusive economic growth and strengthened social protections for Nigerians.
He emphasised that pension reform is a central pillar in building a fair and resilient society.
