A DEVASTATING terrorist attack on an army base in Sabon Gida, Damboa, Borno State, on January 4, 2025, has claimed the lives of six soldiers.

Reports note that the attackers struck at dawn, leaving a trail of destruction and sorrow.

Responding to the tragedy, President Bola Tinubu has directed a thorough investigation to uncover the circumstances surrounding the attack.

He emphasised the importance of learning from the incident to prevent future occurrences.

The President also expressed deep sympathy for the military authorities and the families of the fallen soldiers.

He acknowledged their bravery and sacrifice in defending Nigeria, pledging that their memory will forever be honoured.

Commending the armed forces for their swift and decisive retaliation, Tinubu highlighted the air component’s role in neutralising numerous terrorists and destroying their assets as they attempted to escape.

“This resolute action by the Army demonstrates the capability and readiness of our military to confront and defeat threats to our nation’s security,” the President said.

He called on the military to intensify its efforts in dismantling terrorist camps, particularly in the Northwest, where banditry and insurgency continue to plague communities.

Tinubu urged proactive measures to protect lives and restore peace across the nation.

The President also appealed to Nigerians and the media to support the military in its mission to secure the country.

“Your sacrifices and dedication do not go unnoticed, and we stand firmly behind you in this ongoing fight to eliminate these threats,” Tinubu assured the armed forces.

According to the Defence Headquarters, 34 terrorists were neutralised during the retaliatory operation, with 23 AK-47 rifles and over 200 rounds of ammunition recovered. Despite these achievements, the loss of six soldiers underscores the ongoing challenges in combating terrorism.

Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, reaffirmed that the President is committed to eradicating terrorism and banditry, towards creating a future where peace and security prevail for all Nigerians.
