NIGERIA’s PRESIDENT Bola Tinubu is set to depart Abuja on Saturday for a diplomatic tour spanning Saint Lucia and Brazil, with a focus on fostering regional alliances and advancing Nigeria’s global partnerships.

The mission aims to deepen ties with Caribbean nations and strengthen South-South cooperation through strategic engagements as contained in a statement issued to announce his travel.

First on the itinerary is a state visit to Saint Lucia, where President Tinubu will meet with key leaders including Governor-General Cyril Errol Melchiades Charles and Prime Minister Philip Pierre.

His engagements will also include a formal address at the special joint session of the Senate and House of Assembly of Saint Lucia, hosted at the William Jefferson Clinton Ballroom in Gros Islet.

The visit will also bring together the Heads of Government of the Organisation of Eastern Caribbean States (OECS), senior officials, diplomatic envoys, and representatives of the Nigerian community.

President Tinubu will host a high-level luncheon with OECS leaders following the parliamentary session, focusing on economic partnerships and cultural solidarity. Director-General of OECS, Dr Didacus Jules, has also been invited for the session.

Academic cooperation is also on the agenda, with President Tinubu scheduled to visit Sir Arthur Lewis Community College in Castries to bolster educational exchange.

This visit underlines Nigeria’s commitment to engaging Caribbean states within the framework of the African Union’s Sixth Region, which recognises the African diaspora as integral to the continent’s development.

Nigeria and Saint Lucia maintain strong diplomatic relations through shared memberships in international organisations including the United Nations and the Commonwealth, rooted in a common African ancestry.

The President’s trip is also expected to open pathways for infrastructure collaboration, youth empowerment, and broader diplomatic ties.

After concluding engagements in Saint Lucia, the President will proceed to Brazil for the 17th BRICS Summit in Rio de Janeiro, taking place from 6–7 July 2025.

Nigeria will participate as a ‘partner country’, a category conferred at the invitation of Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, marking a significant upgrade from previous observer status.

The statement notes that this year’s BRICS Summit will explore the theme “Strengthening Global South Cooperation for More Inclusive and Sustainable Governance,” with discussions centring on global cooperation and BRICS partnerships for economic, social, and environmental development.

With the President’s visit, Nigeria joins fellow African nations South Africa, Egypt, and Ethiopia in contributing to the Summit’s objectives.

Senior Nigerian government officials will accompany President Tinubu throughout the diplomatic tour, which is positioned to expand Nigeria’s international presence and reinforce its status as a key player in the Global South, the statement notes.
