TONIGHT MARKS a pivotal moment as Nigeria’s Super Falcons prepare to take on host nation Morocco in the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) final at the Olympic Stadium in Rabat.
President Bola Tinubu has rallied national support for the team, commending their conduct, performance, and unity throughout the tournament.
He highlighted their unbeaten record in the group stage, dominance in the knockout rounds, and the team’s long-standing tradition of excellence, having won all nine previous WAFCON finals.
He described the players as ambassadors of pride and honour, noting their sportsmanship both on and off the field.
In particular, he referenced their gesture of solidarity when visiting Gabriela Salgado of South Africa’s Banyana Banyana after the semi-final, calling it a reflection of shared African values.
To reinforce Nigeria’s presence at the final, the president dispatched a ministerial delegation to Rabat.
The group includes the Minister of Arts, Culture, Tourism, and the Creative Economy, Hannatu Musawa; Minister of State for Finance, Doris Uzoka-Anite; Minister of Women Affairs, Imaan Suleiman-Ibrahim; and the Chairman of the National Sports Commission, Shehu Dikko, among others.
President Tinubu expressed gratitude to the Nigerian community in Morocco, the families of the team, coaching staff, and supporters’ club for their dedication throughout the competition.
He encouraged the players to finish strong and bring home the trophy, reaffirming the nation’s prayers and support for their historic bid to claim a tenth continental title.
The president stated his anticipation to receive the team and officials in Abuja after the final.
