THE PARIS Saint Germain PSG of France on Saturday in Budapest the Hungarian capital retained their title as Champions of Europe beating archrival Arsenal FC of England 4-3 via penalty kicks.
It was an encore of last years semifinal that PSG in the semifinal eliminated Arsenal 1-0 in England a 2-0 in France.
In Budapest PSG won the trophy without scoring a regular goal as all their 5 goals scored were via penalty kicks.
A rebound off Trossad had found Kai Lucas Hevertz who scored a beautiful montage goal (goals for opening TV programmes) in the 6th minute to raise hopes of Arsenal fans across the world to win the night.
A rough tackle in the box saw French International, Ousmane Dembele who just returned from injury lay off tuck in a neat VAR approved penalty supervised by Ref Daniel Siebet in the 64th minute for a painful equalizer.
Arsenal was actually not fantastic today from the stats. Arsenal got 5-19 shots at goal with 1-4 on target; couldn’t control the game in a 28-72% ball possession and stringing 311-847 passes in 120 minutes of play.
Arsenal got 3-11 corner kick advantages as PSG knew that is the strength of the gunners; so Arsenal was put under pressure to commit 16-11 foul plays that attracted 4-2 yellow cards against them.
In the penalty shootouts, Nigerian born Eberechi Eze and Magalhges missed their kicks while Gyokeres, Rice and Martinelli scored.
All PSG shooters scored their takes in this order- Ramos, Doue, Mendez, Hakimi and Beraldo.
Although Arsenal had raised the hopes of their fans through a wonderful record build up to the finals playing 14 matches, winning 11, drawing 3 and loosing no game scoring 29 goals and conceding 6 goals, they forgot that PSG won their 5th consecutive French League title this season while Arsenal their 1st EPL crown in 22 years.
So, no doubles for Arsenal this year. Their fans celebrated the EPL title all over the world with many of them going to church for Thanksgiving service.
I report that each PSG player will pocket €1m about (N2.75B) each for retaining the trophy.
