WELLNESS TOOK the spotlight as Union Bank of Nigeria (UBN) hosted its first-ever Stay Recharged Health Walk, reaffirming the Bank’s commitment to employee well-being and a sustainable, people-centred workplace culture.

The event, designed to promote physical fitness and mental balance among staff, began at the Bank’s Head Office, Stallion Plaza, Marina, and concluded at its Sports Complex, The Stable, on Bode Thomas Street, Surulere.

Participants covered an invigorating 7.5-kilometre route through the bustling streets of Lagos, creating a vibrant display of teamwork, energy, and community spirit.

Employees from various departments and locations across the country joined the walk, transforming it into a unifying experience that celebrated health, resilience, and shared purpose.

The large turnout reflected not only the enthusiasm of the Bank’s workforce but also the strength of its commitment to cultivating a healthy, supportive environment for staff.

The Stay Recharged initiative is an extension of UBN’s employee value proposition, centred on wellness as a key driver of performance, engagement, and growth.

Through this programme, the bank continues to reinforce its culture of care and balance, ensuring that employees thrive both within and beyond the workplace.

Omayuli Wale-Ajayi, Chief Talent Officer of Union Bank, highlighted the purpose and importance of the event.
“At Union Bank, well-being is not an afterthought; it is part of how we work.

“Our inaugural Stay Recharged Health Walk reflects our commitment to building a culture where our people are energised, supported, and thriving.

“When we take care of ourselves, we build stronger teams and stronger institutions.”

Her statement underlines the bank’s approach to people development – a strategy that places employee welfare at the heart of organisational success.

The event encouraged participants to integrate wellness into their daily routines, reinforcing the connection between physical health, mental strength, and sustained productivity.

The Stay Recharged Health Walk aligns with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 3: Good Health and Well-being, and SDG 8: Decent Work and Economic Growth.

These goals emphasise the importance of creating environments where individuals can enjoy good health, meaningful work, and opportunities for sustainable growth.

UBN’s wellness strategy reflects this vision by integrating global sustainability priorities into its operational culture.

Through initiatives such as Stay Recharged, the Bank ensures that its people remain at the centre of its development agenda – fit, motivated, and purpose-driven.

The Health Walk also represented a call to action for continuous investment in human capital. By prioritising employee health and well-being, UBN recognises that a motivated workforce is critical to achieving long-term organisational goals.

Beyond fitness, the event served as a platform to strengthen interdepartmental relationships, foster teamwork, and promote inclusion across its diverse workforce.

Participants described the experience as both energising and unifying, noting that the initiative provided a rare opportunity to connect beyond the office environment.

The collective participation reinforced UBN’s workplace culture of collaboration and mutual support.

The Bank noted that Stay Recharged forms part of a broader framework of wellness initiatives designed to enhance employee experience and drive productivity.

These programmes focus on holistic well-being – encompassing physical health, emotional balance, mental resilience, and social connection.

By maintaining this commitment, UBN continues to distinguish itself as a forward-thinking employer that values not only performance but also the well-being of its people.

The bank’s leadership has consistently demonstrated that employee satisfaction and organisational excellence are inseparable goals.

Through the Stay Recharged Health Walk, Union Bank has reaffirmed its belief that wellness is foundational to success — not a peripheral benefit but a strategic priority.

The event’s success underscores the Bank’s evolving approach to workplace engagement: one where every staff member feels valued, empowered, and equipped to perform at their best.

As the walk concluded at The Stable in Surulere, participants reflected on the sense of accomplishment that came with completing the route.

The activity served as a reminder that physical movement and mental wellness are deeply interconnected, and that sustained success depends on nurturing both.

UBN’s wellness philosophy continues to evolve through evidence-based programmes that support staff at every level.

From fitness activities to health education and preventive care, the bank is embedding well-being in its culture as an ongoing journey, not a one-off event.

This commitment also strengthens Union Bank’s positioning as an employer of choice in Nigeria’s financial sector.

The organisation continues to attract and retain top talent by creating a workplace that supports balance, inclusivity, and personal growth.

By aligning employee wellness with corporate sustainability, UBN contributes to national and global efforts to build healthier communities and more resilient institutions.

Each initiative reinforces the idea that the well-being of people and the progress of organisations are mutually reinforcing goals.

The Bank stated that its long-term goal is to make health-focused engagement a permanent feature of its employee experience strategy.

Beyond annual activities, Stay Recharged will serve as a springboard for ongoing wellness interventions, including awareness sessions, fitness challenges, and community volunteering programmes that promote active lifestyles.

UBN reaffirmed that through initiatives like the Stay Recharged Health Walk, it remains committed to supporting the physical and mental well-being of its workforce while maintaining its legacy of innovation, excellence, and social responsibility.

By continuing to invest in wellness, the bank says it strengthens its internal community and reinforces a shared belief in the value of health as a cornerstone of success, adding that as the inaugural edition of the Health Walk concluded, its message was clear – a healthier workforce builds a stronger institution.
