University Don Worried Over Heavy Drug Abuse Among Youths in South-West Of Nigeria

A UNIVERSITY Don has expressed grave concern over the growing prevalence of drug abuse among youths particularly in the South-West of Nigeria.

The Acting Vice Chancellor of Achievers University, Owo in Ondo State who also teaches Peace and Strategic Studies at the Post Graduate level to Universities and Security organizations, Professor Oyesoji Aremu made the assertion on Friday at the 19th Matriculation Ceremony of the Achievers University before Parents of different spectrum of life especially the South West region of Nigeria.

Matriculating 936 students, 51 of them admitted through direct entry policy of the federal government for the 2025/2026 academic session, Prof Aremu at the Prof Abubakar Adamu Rasheed Auditorium of the institution warned the ‘Freshers’ against cultism, drug abuse and other social vices capable of derailing their academic dreams.

Looking sternly at the matriculates through his glasses the University don said;”Achievers University places premium value on character formation, discipline and academic excellence earned through integrity”.

Explaining to his audience that the admissions of the students were in strict adherence with the standards and guidelines of the National University Commission (NUC), he warned the students: “University life comes with freedom and opportunities but also with dangers. The friends you keep and the choices you make will either propel you towards greatness or lead you astray”.

He repeated his warning that the admission offered them has converted them to be bona-fide members of the highly exalted community with great demand to be responsible, disciplined, be of impeccable integrity and observe strict adherence to the university rules and regulations.

The guest lecturer at the matriculation, who is an Alumnae; a qualified accountant and Head of the Internal Audit Unit. Kwara Area Command of the Nigerian Customs Services. Mrs. Ayobami Felix-Olaniyi charged the new students on diligence, discipline and good conduct.

The Accounting Guru who spoke on the theme: “YOUR UNIVERSITY – YOUR NETWORK FOR BULDING RELATIONSHIPS AND OPPORTUNITIES” urged the students to build quality relationships while on campus.
