THE BLACK Queens of Ghana on Wednesday spanked their Cape Verde counterparts 2-0 in a Group D opener at the WAFCON 2026 tournament in Morocco.

Doris Bosdnwa who plays for Hapoel FC of Jerusalem supplied the match opener 7th minute from a Portia Biakye assist. The 2nd goal that came in the 54th minute was an own goal by Elela Viera.

Boarges Kieydiana of Cape Verde went off the pitch as a bad girl as she was given a straight red card in the 90+1 minute.

Ghana made 7-2 shorts on target but there were 10-2 shots off target; the Queens stringed 33-20 passes winning 6-2 corner kicks with 2-3 yellow cards as the Ghanaians frittered away many good chances with poor set pieces planning.

Ghana ranked 60 in the world coming to the party for the 12th time never won the WAFCON title but they were runners up thrice at the maiden edition in Abeokuta Nigeria in 1998; 2002 and 2006.

Debutante Cape Verde ranked 120 are growing into the continental stage. They had lashed Mauritania 6-0 in 2023 same year Nigeria beat them 5-0. Morocco had beaten them 5-0 in a pre WAFCON friendly in Casablanca this July.

Ghana tops Group D and we await the Malians who are playing Cameroon at 9pm tonight for the 2nd match in group D.

Round 2 matches begins tomorrow Thursday at 6pm with Senegal vs Kenya in Group A and Morocco takes on Algeria at 9pm. Group B matches are on Friday at 6pm when South Africa will play a redemption match against Ivory Coast to win or go home and at 9pm Tanzania will tackle Burkina Faso.
