THE LIONESS of Cameroon Sunday in Cameroon piped the Black Queens of Ghana by a Lone Goal to qualify for the quarterfinals of the WAFCON 2026 tournament in group D even with a match outstanding.
TP Masembe player, Portia Boakye had committed a foul on the penalty box and the resultant kick by Marie Manga in the 19th minute got the victory for Cameroon.
Cameroon parked the train not the bus making useless the 7-7 shots at goal of which 2-6 for Ghana were off target and even the 4-2 corner kicks advantage the Queens got mounting great pressure yielded noting.
Cameroon played their physical ‘jam body’ and hard tackle football that got them 30-15 foul calls but 4-2 yellow cards escaping red card.
Both teams are regular customers meeting 12 times each winning 3 matches with 7 draws 23 goals scored of which Ghana scored 12.
Four times they met at WAFCON level. At the 2015 qualifiers where they played 1-1 in Yaounde on 13th September and Ghana won in Accra on the 18th; on 29th November 2016 Cameroon won by a lone goal and 20th September 2016 it was 1-1.
Cameroon is on top of group D with 6 points from 2 matches and +2 goals difference; Ghana is 2nd with 3 points from 2 matches with +1 goals difference; Mali is 3rd with no point and -1 goals difference in one match like Cape Verde that also has no point but with -2 goals difference.
Cape Verde is meeting Mali at 9.00pm for the 2nd group D game. Ghana is meeting Mali and Cameroon to face Cape Verde at 9pm on Thursday.
Ghana ranked 60 is at the tournament for the 12th time never won the title but were three times Runners up in 1998, 2002 and 2006.
Cameroon ranked 71 are in the tournament for the 11th time never won the title too but were also their times Runners up in 2004, 2014 and 2016.
Last group matches start tomorrow Monday and will be played simultaneously at 9.00pm each day.
