What Happened To Cyril Stober – The NTA News Anchor Who Quietly Left Our Screens?

FOR GENERATIONS of Nigerians, the sound of the evening news was closely associated with familiar voices and faces on television.

Among them was Cyril Stober, the veteran broadcaster whose calm delivery, distinctive voice, glasses and immaculate native attire made him one of the most recognisable faces of Nigerian Television Authority (NTA) Network News.

But what happened to Cyril Stober?

The answer is less dramatic than some may imagine. After decades in broadcasting, Stober retired from the NTA in 2015 and subsequently continued working with the organisation on a contract basis before finally leaving in 2019.

His departure marked the end of an era for viewers who had become accustomed to seeing him deliver major national stories from their television screens.

From Minna to Nigerian Television
Born in Minna, Niger State, Stober did not initially plan to become a broadcaster. His ambition was reportedly to become an engineer.

His journey into broadcasting began modestly with a church programme that was recorded and played back on NBC Radio Kaduna.

That early experience eventually opened the door to a career that would take him from local broadcasting to the national television stage.

Stober began his professional broadcasting career with NTA Minna, gradually rising through the ranks before becoming a familiar face on NTA Network News.

The Voice Behind NTA News at 9
For many Nigerians, Cyril Stober became particularly associated with News at 9 and Tuesday Live, two programmes that occupied prominent positions in the country’s television landscape.

His delivery was measured and authoritative, while his distinctive presentation style made him instantly recognisable.

He interviewed prominent Nigerians and international figures, anchored major programmes and reported stories that shaped the national conversation.

At a time when television remained one of the most important sources of news for millions of Nigerians, broadcasters such as Stober were not simply presenters.

They became part of people’s daily routines.

The Generation of Broadcasters Nigerians Remember
Stober was part of a remarkable generation of Nigerian broadcasters whose voices and personalities became deeply familiar to television audiences.

Among the names associated with that era were Eugenia Abu, Ruth Benemaisia-Opia, Frank Olize and Sienne Allwell-Brown, among others.

For viewers who grew up watching Nigerian television, these broadcasters represented a period when the nightly news was almost a family ritual.

The appearance of a familiar anchor behind the news desk signalled that another day’s major events were about to be brought into Nigerian homes.

Why Did Cyril Stober Leave NTA?
Stober retired from NTA in 2015, bringing an end to his regular career at the organisation.

However, retirement did not immediately take him away from the institution where he had built much of his professional legacy.

He continued working with NTA on a contract basis before eventually making his final departure from the station in 2019.

For viewers, however, the change was more noticeable than the dates suggested.

The familiar face that had appeared on television for years was no longer part of the nightly news routine.

What Is Cyril Stober Doing Now?
Leaving NTA did not mean that Stober disappeared from public life.

In 2023, he was reported to have been ordained a Knight of the Methodist Church, Nigeria.

The veteran broadcaster has also continued to participate in professional and public engagements.

In 2025, Stober was publicly associated with activities as a resource person at the National Defence College in Abuja, reflecting his continued relevance as an experienced media professional.

His post-NTA years therefore appear to have been less about disappearing and more about moving into a quieter phase of professional and public life.

From the Television Screen to a New Chapter
Cyril Stober’s story is also a reminder of how dramatically Nigeria’s media landscape has changed.

The generation that became famous through television news operated in an era when a relatively small number of broadcast channels commanded huge audiences.

Today, television competes with websites, social media platforms, streaming services, podcasts and smartphones for the attention of news consumers.

Yet the memory of broadcasters such as Stober remains strong.

For many Nigerians, his voice is connected to an era when families gathered around the television to watch the day’s major stories.

Cyril Stober: A Career That Outlived the News Desk
So, what happened to Cyril Stober?

He retired.

He stepped away from the NTA news desk.

And after years of being a familiar presence in Nigerian homes, he entered a quieter chapter of his life.

But retirement from television did not erase the legacy he built during decades in broadcasting.

For viewers who remember the old NTA era, Cyril Stober remains one of the voices that helped define Nigerian television news.

The television screen may have changed.

The news industry may have changed.

But for an entire generation of Nigerians, the memory of Cyril Stober delivering the news remains unmistakable.
