APPLICATIONS HAVE opened for a specialised training programme aimed at addressing knowledge and skills gaps in the integration of Artificial Intelligence (AI) into Nigerian newsrooms, with Safer Media Initiative (SMI) announcing a workshop focused on the effective, responsible and safe use of its tools.

JKNewsMedia.com reports that the workshop, themed AI Tools for Journalists: Effective, Responsible, and Safe Use, forms a core component of the AIM Project: Navigating the Present and Shaping the Future.

The organiser, SMI, stated that the programme builds on insights gathered from earlier stakeholder convening, focus groups and surveys conducted under the project.

Executive Director and Chief Executive Officer, SMI, Peter Iorter, said the training would strengthen newsroom practice.

“This workshop will equip participants to explore practical AI tools, enhance reporting quality, and improve overall newsroom efficiency,” he said.

He added that scheduled in-person sessions hold in Lagos on Wednesday, March 18, 2026, in Benin on Friday, March 20, 2026, and in Abuja on Thursday, March 26, 2026.

Then, a virtual training will hold on Saturday, March 28, 2026, for those unable to attend physically.

He said there will also be a virtual question and answer session on Wednesday, April 1, 2026.

Iorter said it is “designed to address the challenges participants may face when trying to apply what they learned during the training.”

Participants will take part in a curriculum that includes Prompt Engineering, described as practical instruction on “The Art of Prompting” to achieve high quality journalistic results.

The programme will also feature a hands-on review of AI powered tools intended to streamline daily workflows.

SMI team added that the sessions will address ethical practices to combat misinformation and maintain editorial standards, alongside strategies to manage gender sensitive risks and ensure digital workspace safety.

He said the call for applications is open to journalists, including reporters, editors and newsroom staff adding that newsroom managers and information technology personnel are also encouraged to apply to support broader newsroom efficiency and digital safety.
