SENATE PRESIDENT Godswill Akpabio has emphasized the urgent need for Plateau State to bolster its town planning laws in response to a recent building collapse that resulted in tragic fatalities.

His remarks came during a courtesy call by Governor Caleb Mutfwang and a delegation of traditional rulers at the National Assembly.

Expressing condolences over the incident, Akpabio underscored the importance of stringent adherence to building regulations to prevent future disasters.

He urged state authorities to prioritize thorough enforcement of these laws without sentiment, emphasizing that structures violating safety standards must be dealt with decisively.

“We extend our heartfelt condolences to the people of Plateau State for the devastating building collapse. This incident underscores the critical need for robust enforcement of town planning laws.

“Regardless of status or influence, buildings erected in violation of regulations, such as those obstructing waterways or lacking adequate foundations, must be addressed promptly,” Akpabio stated.

Acknowledging past challenges in enforcing these regulations, Akpabio stressed the necessity of upholding standards uniformly across all construction projects.

He lamented instances where deference to prominent individuals had compromised safety standards, leading to tragic consequences like the recent loss of lives.

Governor Caleb Mutfwang, in response, expressed gratitude for the Senate President’s condolences and support during this period of mourning.

He highlighted the state’s commitment to improving legislative frameworks, citing ongoing efforts to participate in legislative hearings aimed at enhancing regulatory oversight in sectors such as mining and geosciences.

“We appreciate the solidarity and counsel of the Senate President during this difficult time.

“The tragic incident has spurred us to intensify efforts in reinforcing our town planning laws to safeguard lives and prevent similar tragedies in the future,” Governor Mutfwang affirmed.

The visit coincided with Plateau State’s participation in a public hearing on the Nigerian Institute of Mining and Geosciences (Repeal and Enactment) Bill, 2024, aimed at elevating the institute to a full-fledged university.

Governor Mutfwang expressed optimism that Plateau State would be selected as the host for this prestigious institution, signaling aspirations for regional development and educational advancement.

He expressed confidence that the exchange between Akpabio and himself stressed the broader legislative and developmental goals shared between the federal and state governments, particularly in enhancing safety standards and promoting academic excellence in Nigeria.
