HE LAGOS State House of Assembly has suspended Jelili Sulaimon, the chairman of the Alimosho Local Government Area, indefinitely.

This decision, made during a plenary session, takes immediate effect.

Vice chairman Akinpelu Johnson will assume leadership responsibilities.

Lawmakers mandated council management, including the manager and treasurer, to support Johnson in his new role.

Sulaimon’s suspension follows a unanimous vote, prompted by allegations of misconduct, defiance, and failure to comply with legislative directives.

Hon. Sanni Okanlawon, chairman of the House Committee on Local Government Administration, led the motion.

He highlighted a chaotic incident in April 2024, resulting in the death of Micheal Ajayi, as evidence of Sulaimon’s mismanagement.

Okanlawon revealed that Sulaimon showed continued misconduct throughout the committee’s investigation.

Financial mismanagement and non-compliance with budget processes were central to the decision on Jelili Sulaimon.

Other lawmakers showed concerns over his governance practices, citing a report from the State Auditor-General that documented significant irregularities in Sulaimon’s financial records.

The Speaker of the House, Rt. Hon. Mudashiru Obasa, instructed the Clerk to notify relevant authorities of the Assembly’s decision.

Normally, Lagos House of Assembly has no business suspending an elected local government chairman. He is not their employee. The matter is just like saying that the senate suspends a state governor. That is not possible.

Thank you for this brilliant comment. However, when you look at the Law they say is backing them up; I think we may all have to study it to have some understanding of they run their shows. However, politics in Nigeria is somethign else. They make the whole thing look like some comedy.
