THE REMAINS of former President Muhammadu Buhari were received in Katsina on Tuesday afternoon as national funeral rites began amid solemn tributes and tightened security.

President Bola Tinubu led federal officials, state governors, and West African dignitaries at Umaru Musa Yar’Adua International Airport to honour the late Nigerian leader.

Nigeria’s First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, who had earlier arrived, was present at the Jana’iza ceremony held in Buhari’s hometown.

She was joined by prominent figures including Mrs Fatimah Abbas, wife of the Speaker of the House of Representatives; Hajia Laila Barau, wife of the Deputy Senate President; Barrister Zarah Ribadu, wife of the National Security Adviser; and Mrs Abu Ibrahim.

Governors from several states gathered for the rites, with Dauda Lawal of Zamfara and Babajide Sanwo-Olu of Lagos arriving alongside billionaire businessman Aliko Dangote.

Also in attendance was former Vice President Yemi Osinbajo, who served alongside Buhari during his two-term presidency.

From the Republic of Niger, Prime Minister Ali Lamine Zeine was welcomed by Governor Dikko Umaru Radda upon arrival in Katsina, representing a wider show of solidarity from neighbouring countries.

Additional delegations from across the West African region are expected to attend the final rites.

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar returned swiftly from an international engagement to pay his respects to the late former president, according to veteran journalist Dele Momodu.

As the nation begins its formal mourning process, security has been visibly reinforced across Katsina. Traditional rulers, senior officials, and foreign representatives continue to arrive for the multi-day Islamic burial ceremonies.
