THE REMAINS of former President Muhammadu Buhari arrived at Katsina Airport on Monday following his death at a London clinic on Sunday.
President Bola Tinubu received the corpse upon arrival, marking the commencement of national burial proceedings.
A military parade in honour of the late president unfolded on the tarmac, with top military officers leading the ceremonial salute.
The Nigerian flag was flown at half-mast as soldiers stood in formation, paying tribute to Buhari’s role as a former military Head of State and elected civilian President.
Security presence across Katsina has intensified as the state braces for a significant influx of dignitaries.
Tight cordons and military patrols were visible along major routes linking Katsina city to Daura, Buhari’s hometown, where his funeral is expected to take place.
Vice President Kashim Shettima is among the key officials who have arrived in Katsina to participate in the funeral rites.
Other dignitaries include state governors, federal lawmakers, ministers, traditional rulers, and international representatives. Daura has seen a surge in crowd movement as residents prepare for the burial ceremony.
The Nigerian Air Force and other security agencies have deployed additional personnel to maintain order throughout the proceedings.
Local authorities confirmed that arrangements were made to ensure the safety of all visitors and to manage traffic disruption as thousands gather to pay their last respects.
Muhammadu Buhari served as Nigeria’s military ruler from 1983 to 1985 before being democratically elected as president in 2015, serving two terms until 2023.
His burial is scheduled to take place in his family compound where a slot has been slated ahead of the interment.
