THE FRESH tariffs imposed by the United States on Canadian exports, has triggered swift retaliation from Ottawa.
The move, which includes a 25% tariff on Canadian goods and a 10% levy on Canadian energy, has drawn strong condemnation from Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, who called it unjustified and warned of economic consequences for both nations.
In response, Canada said it will also impose 25% tariffs on $155 billion worth of American goods, effective immediately.
PM Trudeau, in a statement on his website, stressed that Canada had taken significant steps to combat the fentanyl crisis, an issue cited by the US as part of its justification for the tariffs.
He highlighted Canada’s $1.3 billion border security initiative, the appointment of a Fentanyl Czar, and joint efforts with US law enforcement, resulting in a 97% drop in fentanyl seizures from Canada.
Trudeau also warned that American consumers would bear the brunt of the trade dispute, with higher prices on essentials such as groceries, gas, and cars.
The tariffs, he added, would remain until the US rescinds its decision.
