AN ALARMING outbreak of cholera has emerged within Kirikiri prison in Lagos, prompting an immediate response from the Lagos State government.
Professor Akin Abayomi, the State Health Commissioner, revealed that swift action is underway, bolstered by additional support from the World Health Organization (WHO).
Authorities have dispatched essential medical supplies to the prison and are addressing water and sanitation issues to curb the spread of the disease.
Investigations, had weeks ago, traced the cholera epidemic in Lagos to unregulated street drinks and contaminated water sources.
Laboratory tests on popular street beverages in the affected regions confirmed the presence of Vibrio cholerae bacteria.
The government is now intensifying efforts to regulate and monitor the production and distribution of these street beverages to prevent further contamination.
While there has been a noticeable decline in daily cholera cases, health officials warn that low-grade community transmission persists.
Fortunately, no new cholera-related deaths have been recorded in the past 72 hours.
To combat the spread of food and water-borne diseases however, the state is implementing rigorous environmental health measures and enforcing stricter regulations on local beverage producers.
Residents are strongly advised to adhere to health guidelines, consume only safe water and food, maintain proper hygiene, and seek immediate medical care if they exhibit cholera symptoms.
The government reassures the public that cholera treatment is free at all government hospitals and remains confident in its ability to manage the outbreak effectively.
In a rapid response, the WHO has provided substantial pharmaceutical support to aid Lagos State sequel to the news that twenty-five cases of cholera have been confirmed at Kirikiri prison.
WHO’s contribution includes 10,000 doses of essential medications as aid that is critical for the prison’s health facilities, ensuring they can implement effective prevention strategies for the approximately 3,200 inmates if necessary.
Lagos Health Commissioner, Professor Abayomi stressed the success of the urgent interventions, highlighting the distribution of intravenous fluids and infection prevention supplies to Kirikiri Medium Prison.
He also noted that the state’s proactive approach aims to halt the outbreak and protect public health, with ongoing efforts to ensure safe water supplies and hygienic conditions across Lagos.
