CONTRACTORS IN Delta State are facing increasing pressure as the government reinforces its commitment to infrastructure development, ensuring that mobilisation payments are put to proper use.
The Delta State Commissioner for Works (Rural Roads) and Public Information, Mr. Charles Aniagwu, emphasised that with 40% mobilisation paid upfront for most newly awarded projects, it has become unappealing for contractors to sell their projects.
Speaking on a TV magazine programme, Aniagwu reaffirmed that Delta State ranks high in the standard of living among Nigerian states.
He highlighted that under the current administration, all projects have been executed without borrowing.
He also dismissed speculation that Governor Sheriff Oborevwori might defect from the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), describing such claims as distractions. “
The governor is focused on delivering on his promises, not on political manoeuvres,” he stated.
On Government’s Commitment to Development
The Delta State Government reiterated that Governor Oborevwori’s MORE Agenda is visible across all sectors, debunking allegations of marginalisation raised by former Deputy Senate President, Senator Ovie Omo-Agege.
Aniagwu noted that the administration’s governance style has effectively fostered unity among the state’s diverse ethnic groups.
“We have erased those divides through inclusive appointments, fair distribution of projects, and a governance philosophy that prioritises equity,” he said.
During a recent inspection of projects across the three senatorial districts, Aniagwu cited various ongoing and completed developments, including:
▪️Omadino Technical College, Warri South – A state-of-the-art technical college nearing completion, expected to open by September 2025.
▪️Stormwater Drainage Project – Aimed at mitigating flooding in Warri, Effurun, and surrounding areas, progressing in multiple phases.
▪️Warri City Stadium Renovation – A major remodelling project estimated at N30 billion.
▪️Ohoror-Bomadi Road – 47 kilometres of roadworks spanning five local government areas, with over 30 kilometres under active development.
▪️Aladja-Ogbe-Ijoh Road – A crucial connection between the Central and South Senatorial Districts.
▪️Isoko Ring Road – Governor Oborevwori personally assessed the progress to ensure timely completion.
▪️Southern Delta University, Ozoro – The College of Health Sciences is near completion, with additional structures underway.
Governance Beyond Politics
Aniagwu asserted that Governor Oborevwori’s administration is committed to delivering tangible results rather than engaging in political distractions.
He highlighted that during recent project inspections, residents in Warri expressed their approval, coining the phrase: “Sheriff dey show workings, nor be chor chor chor” (meaning, the governor is demonstrating results, not just making empty promises).
The administration’s focus extends beyond physical infrastructure, he adds.
He also said that plans are underway to equip hospitals in Warri, Asaba, and Oghara with CT scans, ensuring better healthcare services.
Additionally, the government continues to invest in education, with the Orerokpe campus set to receive students by September 2025, Aniagwu stated.
Peace Efforts and Contractor Accountability
Over the weekend, Governor Oborevwori successfully mediated a long-standing land dispute between the Aladja and Ogbe-Ijoh communities, securing a peace agreement that both parties have pledged to uphold.
Subsequently, Aniagwu issued a warning to contractors handling multiple projects without making significant progress.
“Any contractor with excessive jobs but failing to deliver quality work on time will not be awarded new contracts,” he declared.
Despite opposition criticisms, Aniagwu reiterated that the government remains undeterred, with more projects set to be approved at the next Executive Council meeting.
