THE 2024 Governance Accountability and Transparency Index (G.A.T.I) has recognised Delta State among the top 10 Nigerian states demonstrating exceptional transparency and accountability.

The index, a project of the Guild of Online Media Editors and Publishers (G.O.M.E.P) Nigeria, assessed the performance of all 36 states through seven critical governance indices.

Delta, along with Lagos, Kwara, Ekiti, Anambra, Enugu, Benue, Akwa Ibom, Borno, and Osun, ranked in Category A for scoring between 85% and 100%, reflecting Exceptional Performance (EP).

G.O.M.E.P unveiled the report on November 26, 2024, in Abuja, with its National President, Dr Dozie Nwankodu, emphasising the role of such evaluations in promoting good governance.

The indices examined include Public Access to Information, Budget Transparency, Anti-Corruption Efforts, and Media Freedom.

Data collection involved surveys, expert reviews, and analyses of publicly available information. Over 12,600 data points were gathered across the states within 90 days, employing a rigorous methodology.

Comrade Akpovoke Treasure Otiti, Chair of this year’s Appraisal Committee, highlighted the meticulous approach taken, involving a 36-member team of media, academic, and civil society professionals.

The group ensured international best practices in data aggregation and state ratings.

The rankings were based on points awarded per index, with each state’s final score determined by averaging the results from all indices.

Moreover, scores were grouped into categories ranging from Exceptional Performance to Non-Performance.

Also according to Otiti, G.O.M.E.P’s dedication to transparency ensures accountability across the states.

The Guild represents over 75 media executives committed to leveraging digital platforms for accurate governance reportage while maintaining its watchdog role.

The report, aimed at becoming an annual publication, seeks to deepen transparency and accountability in Nigerian governance.
