Election Peace Talks Must Include Wider Stakeholders

AGAIN, POLITICAL parties, the electoral body and candidates remain the key actors driving discussions on peace agreements ahead of the elections. For these actors, peaceful elections are non-negotiable, as the country cannot afford a crisis during or after the polls.

Our analysts, however, observe that other actors need to key into the conversation to ensure that the systems for organising and conducting the elections meet the required standards.

Background information:

Peace agreements ahead of elections are intended to encourage political parties, candidates and other key stakeholders to commit to peaceful conduct throughout the electoral process.

While political parties, the electoral body and candidates remain central to such discussions, the organisation and conduct of elections also involve wider systems and processes that require the attention of other stakeholders.

Their participation can help ensure that these systems meet the standards needed to support peaceful elections and reduce the risk of disputes or crisis during and after the polls.
