Extra Days Off for Ogun Civil Servants as State Prepares for Minimum Wage Implementation

CIVIL SERVANTS in Ogun State will soon enjoy a more flexible work schedule to ease commuting challenges following the removal of fuel subsidies.

The government, in a bid to address these issues, has approved two days off per week for workers on Grade Level 01-14 and one day off for those on Grade Level 15-17.

This initiative aims to reduce the financial strain on state workers and improve productivity through a well-rested workforce.

The Head of Service, Mr. Kehinde Onasanya, confirmed the decision and stated that all heads of departments should immediately implement this policy without disrupting essential services.

This move follows a previous policy introduced in July 2023, allowing one day off for all grade levels, which is now extended to offer further relief to lower-grade workers.

Addressing Fiscal Hurdles

Governor Dapo Abiodun is also taking steps to address the financial challenges faced by the state’s workforce, announcing his administration’s commitment to implementing the new minimum wage.

He stressed that Ogun State would be among the first to enact the new wage, pledging that all efforts are being made to raise revenue while ensuring efficient use of resources.

In a meeting with labour leaders, the governor assured that his administration is exploring various measures to lessen the economic burden on workers, particularly as a result of the fuel price hike.

He revealed that the federal government is supporting the state’s energy transition programme by providing Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) buses and conversion kits to lower transportation costs.

The state government will supplement this with 100 CNG-powered buses for public transport to ease commuting challenges.

Acknowledges Spike in Transport Fares

Governor Dapo Abiodun has acknowledged that the sharp rise in transport fares due to the subsidy removal had severely impacted the public.

He promised that his government would work to lower these costs by promoting the use of CNG vehicles and electric transport, with the ultimate goal of reducing the reliance on petrol.

The state has been chosen as a hub for vehicle conversion to CNG, further strengthening its commitment to alternative energy.

Kicked Against Transport Exploitation

Meanwhile, the governor has warned transporters against exploiting the public through excessive fare increases.

A newly established enforcement committee, including law enforcement agencies and transport union leaders, will oversee the regulation of transport fares.

This task force will ensure compliance with agreed-upon rates to prevent further hardship on residents.

Ogun State’s labour leaders expressed gratitude to the governor for involving them in decision-making processes.

The leadership of both the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC) highlighted the need for price regulation in the markets and called for additional support in transportation to assist both workers and students.

In response to the current economic conditions, Governor Abiodun has initiated farmers’ markets to sell food at subsidized prices.

These measures are expected to provide much-needed relief to Ogun residents as they navigate the challenges posed by the removal of fuel subsidies and the rising cost of living.
