THE FEDERAL Government has declared Tuesday, 15 July 2025, a public holiday to honour the memory of the late former President of Nigeria, Muhammadu Buhari, GCFR, who passed away in London on Sunday after a prolonged illness.

The Minister of Interior, Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, made the announcement following the approval of President Bola Tinubu, GCFR.

He described the public holiday as a mark of respect for the late President’s distinguished service to Nigeria, citing Buhari’s enduring commitment to national unity, democratic governance, and development.

The Minister encouraged Nigerians to observe the day by reflecting on Buhari’s legacy, promoting peace and patriotism, and advancing national cohesion in line with his vision for the country.

The government earlier directed that national flags fly at half-mast for seven days, beginning Sunday, 13 July.

The remains of the former President are scheduled to arrive in Nigeria from London by noon on Tuesday.

He will be buried in his hometown, Daura, in accordance with Islamic rites.

President Tinubu directed Vice President Kashim Shettima and Chief of Staff Femi Gbajabiamila to accompany the body back home and convey condolences to the Buhari family.

FG Shifts FEC

A special Federal Executive Council (FEC) session initially planned for Tuesday has been postponed to allow for government officials full participation in the state funeral.

The Secretary to the Government of the Federation(SGF) said a new date will be announced for the session in due course.

President Tinubu had called for the FEC gathering on Sunday to recognise the late leader’s contributions to Nigeria’s political and democratic history.

The FG also extended its condolences to Buhari’s family, the people of Katsina State, and all Nigerians.
