EFFORTS TO deliver stable and reliable electricity to households, businesses and industries in Lagos have gained fresh momentum, with the Federal Government and Lagos State agreeing to work together under the 24/7 Energy Zones pilot approved by President Bola Tinubu.
JKNewsMedia.com he agreement followed a high-level technical session at Lagos House, Marina, between the Minister of Power, Joseph Tegbe, and the leadership of the Ministry, and Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo Olu.
He said the pilot will begin in Lagos before extending to the Abuja Kaduna Kano and Enugu Port Harcourt corridors, creating a pathway for expansion across major commercial and industrial hubs in the country.
Tegbe said the Ministry had engaged the distribution companies and secured their commitment to off take more power and provide steady and reliable electricity to customers along the Lagos corridor.
He also expressed the Ministry’s readiness to work with Lagos State on the four priority areas approved by the President: Grid Stabilisation, Market Liquidity, Grid Expansion, and Governance and Regulatory Harmonisation.
Sanwo Olu commended the Federal Government delegation for its seriousness, noting that Tegbe had demonstrated the willingness and capacity to resolve lingering challenges in the power sector since assuming office as Minister.
The governor said Lagos State was equally committed to finding pragmatic solutions that would make the electricity sector work for Nigerians, particularly Lagosians, while creating a bankable, collaborative and competitive electricity market in the state.
To translate the commitments into action, Tegbe announced the constitution of a Joint Technical Committee to address knotty issues and recommend the next steps.
Also, the committee will be chaired by the Managing Director of NISO and co chaired by the Permanent Secretary of the Lagos State Ministry of Energy as its membership will include representatives of NERC, TCN, REA, LASERC, LAISO, LSEA and the Office of the Minister of Power.
A statement also notes that the technical committee will report to a Steering Committee chaired by the Lagos State Governor and co chaired by the Minister of Power.
The Special Adviser to the President on Power, the Permanent Secretary of the Federal Ministry of Power and the Lagos State Commissioner for Energy will serve as members.
Also present at the meeting were the Special Adviser to the President on Power, Dr Lanre Babalola; the Permanent Secretary of the Federal Ministry of Power, Alh Mahmuda Mamman; the Deputy Governor of Lagos State, Dr Kadiri Obafemi Hamzat; the Lagos State Commissioner for Energy, Mr Biodun Ogunleye; the Managing Directors of TCN, NISO and REA; and other senior officials of the Federal Ministry of Power and the Lagos State Government.
