THE BATTLE against illicit drugs in Nigeria has gained international recognition as the French government commended the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) for its exceptional crackdown on drug trafficking.

In a move to strengthen bilateral cooperation, France also donated operational equipment to enhance the agency’s efficiency.

During a formal handover at NDLEA’s National Headquarters in Abuja on Thursday, 13th March 2025, French Ambassador to Nigeria, Marc Fonbaustier, commended the agency’s achievements.

He highlighted the remarkable progress made, citing over 57,792 arrests, the seizure of 9.9 million kilograms of illicit substances, and 10,572 convictions in the past four years.

Fonbaustier acknowledged Nigeria’s strong track record, describing it as one of the leading nations in global drug enforcement.

“You’re one of the best in the world in the fight against illicit drugs and narcotics. Your operational successes—high arrest rates, substantial seizures, and convictions—position NDLEA as a model agency,” Fonbaustier stated.

He expressed optimism that both nations could learn from each other in combatting drug-related crimes.

NDLEA Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, Brigadier General Mohamed Buba Marwa (Rtd), welcomed the French government’s support, affirming Nigeria’s commitment to sustained collaboration.

Marwa acknowledged the importance of the donated equipment, describing them as crucial tools that would significantly enhance the agency’s operations.

He further emphasized the need for specialised training in investigative techniques and cyber-related financial transactions to bolster NDLEA’s effectiveness.

Additionally, Marwa reiterated the agency’s commitment to its Alternative Development Project, which seeks to transition cannabis growers towards cultivating legal crops, urging continued international assistance.

He also reiterated that the partnership between Nigeria and France continues to strengthen, particularly following President Bola Tinubu’s recent state visit to France.

Marwa noted that as both nations deepen their cooperation in counter-narcotics efforts, the latest donation stresses the shared commitment to tackling the global drug trade.
