RIVERS STATE’s commitment to governance and the welfare of its people remains unwavering, Governor Siminalayi Fubara has said.

Speaking at the Emblem Appeal Fund Launch in Port Harcourt ahead of the Armed Forces Remembrance Day, Fubara detailed his administration’s strides in improving civil service wages, professional employment, and educational opportunities while addressing challenges to state security and governance.

The governor dismissed claims of causing hardship, insisting his administration prioritises the people’s well-being.

He cited the recent implementation of an N85,000 minimum wage for civil servants and explained the decision to suspend the blanket employment of 10,000 workers.

Instead, he approved 2,000 medical professionals and 1,000 new positions for teachers in basic and post-primary education.

Scholarship opportunities have also been extended to students at PAMO University of Medical Sciences and Wigwe University.

Fubara assured that more scholarships would follow under a restructured Rivers State Scholarship Board, offering expanded criteria for selection.

Acknowledging security concerns, the governor stated, “Some individuals sought to disrupt the Christmas season, but our government stood firm in ensuring stability.

Civil servants now earn between N120,000 and N140,000, demonstrating our resolve to meet obligations despite declining allocations.”

He emphasised that true governance ensures lasting happiness and opportunities for the people.

Fubara expressed personal attachment to the Emblem Appeal Fund, describing his upbringing as the son of a military officer and the joy he witnessed in his family during similar events.

“No amount can match the sacrifices of our fallen heroes, but we can cushion the effects on their families through collective support,” he said, announcing a N40 million donation on behalf of the government.

The governor urged the Nigeria Legion to channel part of the funds raised into their scholarship scheme for veterans’ children.

He also assured them that the promised employment slots for their members would materialise once the embargo on general recruitment lifts.

Secretary to the State Government, Dr Tammy Danagogo, lauded the contributions of military personnel, past and present, who sacrificed their lives and comfort for national peace.

He appealed to attendees to donate generously to support their welfare.

The Acting Chairman of the Nigeria Legion’s Rivers State chapter, ACC Kuu Aminkipo Promise, commended Governor Fubara for his administration’s backing but noted delays in accessing the promised 50 employment slots.

He urged continued support for the legion’s scholarship scheme to secure a brighter future for veterans’ dependants.

The government promise that it would intensify efforts to prioritise the welfare of civil servants, veterans, and their families while maintaining peace and security in Rivers State.
