THE GANI Fawehinmi Memorial Organisation (GAFAMORG) has announced that it will hold an extended emergency meeting of its Governing Council and stakeholders on Thursday, 11 September 2025, at the Right House, Adeniyi Jones Avenue, Ikeja, Lagos.
The organisation stated that the meeting, scheduled for 11:00am, will coincide with the 16th Memorial Anniversary of Chief Ganiyu Oyesola Fawehinmi, SAM, SAN.
It will also serve as a decisive step to address internal challenges and reposition itself as a relevant voice in Nigeria’s civic space.
Chief Gani Fawehinmi, widely remembered as the “Senior Advocate of the Masses,” built his reputation on a lifelong defence of the poor and oppressed.

GAFAMORG noted that sixteen years after his passing, Nigeria faces pressing crises including economic hardship, insecurity, corruption, and declining democratic values, all of which mirror the battles he fought. Representatives of the organisation said it cannot afford to remain silent in the face of such challenges.
The organisation pointed to younger activists such as Omoyele Sowore as figures who continue to speak truth to power despite personal risks.
It added that it has a responsibility to support and amplify these voices to ensure Fawehinmi’s ideals remain central in Nigeria’s fight for justice.
GAFAMORG also called on contemporaries and associates of the late Fawehinmi, including Femi Falana, Femi Aborishade, Osagie Obayuwana, and Richard Akinola, to unite as a formidable force against what it described as anti-people policies that perpetuate hardship and undermine citizens’ rights.
The organisation admitted that it has been hampered by internal disputes that have weakened its effectiveness.
It cited a leadership crisis that has limited the capacity of the Governing Council, alongside the weakening of the Board of Trustees following the deaths of Barrister Bamidele Aturu and Comrade Segun Akele.
With only two trustees remaining, GAFAMORG said the board has been left critically undermanned, creating a vacuum at the organisation’s highest decision-making level.
It described this situation as unacceptable and contrary to the values of its founder.
The emergency meeting, GAFAMORG confirmed, will focus on reaffirming its mission to promote the rule of law, civic education, and good governance.
It will also seek to resolve the leadership crisis by re-mandating the Governing Council and reconstituting the Board of Trustees.
Other objectives include expanding stakeholder participation for accountability, adopting a new strategic advocacy framework, and repositioning the organisation as an independent voice in Nigeria’s civic and political life.
GAFAMORG stressed that the anniversary will serve not only as a memorial for Fawehinmi but also as a moment of renewal.
It called on members, civil society organisations, professional bodies, the media, and the Nigerian public to participate in the reorganisation process.
The organisation said allowing GAFAMORG to fall into irrelevance would dishonour the legacy of Chief Fawehinmi and betray the values he lived and died for.
The statement was signed by Comrade Agbedina Omokehinde, Secretary of the Governing Council, and Comrade Akintunde Adedeji, Publicity Secretary, on behalf of the Governing Council and stakeholders.
