THE GATEWAY International Airport in Ogun State now stands among Nigeria’s most advanced aviation hubs, fully equipped to compete globally with its cutting-edge infrastructure and aviation safety systems.
According to the Ogun State Government, the airport is now ready for scheduled local and international flight operations following the completion of world-class lighting installations and critical safety features.
These enhancements position the airport as a key gateway for business and cargo traffic in Nigeria’s southwest corridor.
The government confirmed the facility’s compliance with international standards in a statement issued by Hon. Kayode Akinmade, Special Adviser on Media and Strategy to Governor Dapo Abiodun.
Among the highlights is a Category I (CAT I) approach lighting system, designed to assist pilots during low-visibility approaches.
The system is supported by runway elevated end lights and displaced threshold lights, providing essential visual references for safe aircraft movement.
Additional technical upgrades include runway edge lighting for lateral guidance during takeoff and landing, and Precision Approach Path Indicators (PAPI) that supply pilots with glide path visuals for accurate descent and touchdown.
Built as a Category 9 fire cover airport, the facility is equipped to handle aircraft of all sizes under any lighting or weather condition.
Complementing its operational capabilities, the airport also features high-specification VIP lounges and premium business facilities tailored to the needs of corporate travellers.
These areas are designed to allow for productivity and meetings while awaiting boarding.
Previously disclosed structural specifications show the airport boasts a 3.4-kilometre runway, qualifying it as a Class E aerodrome.
This allows it to host large aircraft such as Boeing 777s, 747s, and Airbus models.
The apron spans 82,000 square metres, making it suitable for high-capacity passenger jets and heavy-duty cargo planes.
With these enhancements, the Gateway International Airport reinforces Ogun State’s push towards becoming a major logistics and aviation hub, aligning with broader infrastructure expansion goals in the region.
