CHIEF EXECUTIVE Officer (CEO) Sundar Pichai, has announced that Google’s Gemini AI Assistant has surpassed 1 billion monthly users, becoming the company’s 14th product to reach the milestone and its fastest-growing product ever.
JKNewsMedia.com reports that the company announced the achievement on August 11, after Gemini’s monthly user base rose from about 750 million earlier this year to 950 million in July and then 1 billion in August.
Google CEO said the figure covers users of the Gemini app and related Gemini experiences, rather than everyone who encounters its AI through products such as Search.
More than 100 million of Gemini’s monthly active users access the service on Apple devices, the company added.
The milestone comes after ChatGPT reached 1 billion monthly active app users in May 2026, according to market-intelligence firm Sensor Tower, as reported by Reuters.
OpenAI later said ChatGPT had surpassed 1 billion weekly active users in July and publicly highlighted the milestone on August 6. The company had previously reported 900 million weekly active users in February.
The figures measure different user activity periods, with Google reporting monthly active users for Gemini and OpenAI emphasising weekly active users for ChatGPT.
Supporting AI services at this scale has also required significant spending. Alphabet, Google’s parent company, generated about $39.1 billion in operating cash flow in the second quarter but spent about $44.9 billion on capital expenditures, much of it linked to infrastructure supporting its AI and cloud businesses.
The spending resulted in approximately $5.8 billion in negative free cash flow, Alphabet’s first negative quarter on that measure as a public company, although its operations continued to generate substantial cash.
Google, OpenAI, Anthropic and other AI companies are competing over how frequently people use their assistants, what the systems can do, their integration into everyday products and businesses, and how the companies turn large user bases into sustainable revenue.
With Gemini now exceeding 1 billion monthly users and ChatGPT surpassing 1 billion weekly users, AI assistants have reached a scale once associated mainly with the world’s largest internet platforms.
