PROMOTION OF science and technology among young Nigerians is taking centre stage as the Glo Foundation, the corporate social responsibility arm of Globacom, announced a nationwide Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) competition dedicated to girls in senior secondary schools.
The initiative, unveiled as part of activities to mark this year’s International Day of the Girl Child, is designed to deepen interest in STEM and encourage career choices in those fields.
According to a statement from the Foundation, the contest, tagged ‘Glo Innov8’ National STEM Competition, seeks to inspire schoolgirls across the federation to “Compete, Innovate and Win.”
The organisation noted that the programme aims not only to promote innovation but also to boost the knowledge and confidence of girls in STEM subjects.
The Foundation explained that the competition represents its contribution to national development by motivating the girl child to embrace STEM disciplines.
“It is our modest way at Glo Foundation of celebrating and encouraging the girl child to focus more on the studies of STEM subjects and pursue careers in these areas in future so as to become problem solvers for the country,” the statement read.
Prizes worth N5 million have been set aside for winning schools, their students, and teachers.
The top prize of N2,000,000 will go to the overall winning school with the best idea, while the two students representing the school will each receive a laptop.
In addition, the Teacher, Mentor, or STEM Coordinator of the winning team will be rewarded with N200,000.
Consolation prizes are also earmarked for the schools that place second and third.
Both the participating students and their mentors from these schools will be recognised with rewards to further strengthen their engagement with the competition.
The Foundation emphasised that registration for the challenge commenced on Monday, 15 September 2025, and will run until 5 October 2025.
Interested schools have been directed to visit the official competition portal at https://glo-foundation.com/glo-innov8/ to complete their registration forms.
The organisation confirmed that the competition will culminate in schools showcasing innovative STEM-driven projects, with emphasis placed on creativity, practical application, and problem-solving potential.
By focusing on young girls, the initiative aligns with the broader goal of increasing female participation in STEM disciplines, where representation has historically been low.
The Foundation reiterated that the ‘Glo Innov8’ National STEM Competition forms a core part of its annual programme for the International Day of the Girl Child.
It stated that the project underlines its consistent investment in youth development through platforms that harness creativity and empower young Nigerians with knowledge and tools to thrive in technology-driven environments.
With the assurance of nationwide reach, the Foundation expressed optimism that the initiative will foster a generation of female innovators capable of addressing critical challenges in society.
It further urged schools to take advantage of the opportunity to “STEM their way to N5,000,000.”
