TWO DECADES of transformation in Nigeria’s telecommunications sector reached a milestone this week as Globacom celebrated 22 years of operations, reaffirming its pledge to expand digital access nationwide.

The company expressed gratitude to its subscribers, crediting their loyalty as the driving force behind its growth since commencing services on 29 August 2003.

In a message of gratitude to customers contained in an e-press statement, Globacom stated: “22 years of Glo is a story of resilience and strength, and through every storm, you, our loyal subscribers, have powered our network. With every connection, you have fuelled our growth.”

The telecommunications provider also highlighted its pioneering contributions to the sector, recalling how it broke ground as the first mobile operator in Nigeria to introduce per-second billing.

It also claims to have reduced the cost of SIM cards at launch, enabling millions of Nigerians to access mobile services for the first time.

Since inception, the company said it has consistently focused on infrastructure development and innovation.

Furthermore, it built an extensive fibre optic network across the country, one of the largest in Africa, connecting major cities, smaller towns, and underserved areas.

The company said it also launched Glo 1, Africa’s first privately owned undersea cable, which significantly boosted broadband capacity in Nigeria and strengthened the country’s digital economy.

Globacom underscored its role in introducing affordable and diverse voice and data packages, which expanded access to telecommunications for individuals, businesses, and institutions nationwide.

The company said these services have been central to broadening communication opportunities and advancing digital inclusion.

Beyond telecommunications, the organisation emphasised its wider contributions to national development.

It has invested in sports, entertainment, education, arts, and culture, while promoting Nigerian and African talent on international platforms.

Globacom noted that these initiatives have reinforced its position as a partner in progress for the country and the continent.

Looking to the future, the company pledged continued investment in next-generation technologies and service expansion.

It reiterated plans to provide platforms that will power innovation, e-commerce, fintech, entertainment, and everyday life in Nigeria and across Africa.

Globacom said: “As we reflect on these achievements, we remain steadfast in our mission to lead Nigeria and Africa into a fully digitalised future.

“We will continue to invest in next-generation technologies, expand data services, and create platforms that will power innovation, e-commerce, fintech, entertainment, and everyday life.

Globacom will stay committed to providing limitless opportunities for individuals and businesses. The future is bright, and together we will march into a new era of boundless possibilities,”

The telecommunications company reaffirmed its vision of a connected and empowered Nigeria, emphasising that its customers remain central to its mission as it embarks on its next phase of growth.
