FAILURE TO attend a recent official event has led to the suspension of 87 Ebonyi State government officials, including 25 commissioners, 14 senior special assistants, 24 special assistants, and 22 permanent secretaries.
Governor Francis Nwifuru ordered the suspension with immediate effect, describing the officials’ absence as a breach of duty and administrative negligence.
A statement released by the governor’s spokesperson on Monday confirmed that the suspended personnel would serve a one-month working suspension without pay.
During the suspension period, affected officials are barred from signing any documents or carrying out functions relating to their offices.
All suspended commissioners have been directed to hand over immediately to their respective permanent secretaries.
The governor’s decision follows observations made during the event, where the non-attendance of several high-ranking officials was viewed as a dereliction of responsibility.
The state government has treated the matter as a serious infraction requiring disciplinary action.
Among the suspended commissioners are Engr. Stanley Lebechi Mbam, Prof. Leonard Uguru, Dr. Mathew Nwobashi, Prof. Nwogo Obasi, Hon. Victor Chukwu, and Barr. Ikeuwa Omebe. Others include Dr. Mrs Ngozi Obichukwu, Chief Richard Idike, Engr. Francis Ori, Chief Sunday Inyima, and Hon. Stanley Ogbuewu, among others.
Governor Nwifuru’s action stressed that it was in the bid for a push for greater accountability within the Ebonyi State executive and civil service structures.
