THE WORLD bids farewell to Jimmy Carter, the 39th President of the United States, as his funeral procession begins in Georgia.

The ceremony commenced with US Secret Service agents carrying Carter’s coffin through Plains, Georgia—his hometown.

The procession later passed his childhood home before continuing to Atlanta.

Carter, who died on December 29, 2024, at the age of 100, was celebrated with a bell ceremony, ringing 39 times to honour his presidency.

He spent his final months in hospice care after battling cancer and other health challenges.

World leaders, including Nigeria’s President Bola Tinubu, US President Joe Biden, and President-elect Donald Trump, have expressed profound grief over his passing.

Biden described Carter as “a man of principle, faith, and humility,” while Trump acknowledged the debt of gratitude owed by Americans for his contributions.

Known for his humanitarian efforts, Carter and his wife Rosalynn worked with Habitat for Humanity, helping build or repair over 4,000 homes.

His advocacy for civil rights, his commitment to peace, and his post-presidential activism earned him respect globally.

Carter’s body will be laid to rest in Plains, where he lived a life of service to his community and the world.
