RECOGNITION FOR leadership in sustainable construction has gone to Julius Berger Nigeria PLC, named winner of the inaugural award by the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) through its Sustainable Infrastructure Recognition Awards (SIRA) platform.
The honour was conferred at the conclusion of the 2025 Sustainable Infrastructure Conference held in Lagos, where ASCE described SIRA as Nigeria’s premier platform for recognising excellence in climate-resilient and environmentally impactful infrastructure.
The award celebrates organisations and projects demonstrating innovation, resilience and bold leadership in shaping the built environment.
Julius Berger received the award for its pioneering efforts in sustainable construction and engineering practices, particularly its leadership in applying green energy solutions and climate-aligned designs.
According to ASCE, the company’s work reflects a transformative shift in infrastructure delivery, prioritising conscience over convention.
A key highlight was Julius Berger’s application of Bitumen Stabilised Materials (BSM) technology on the Abuja-Kaduna-Zaria-Kano road project.
The ASCE commended this as a significant innovation and called for its wider adoption. “We are celebrating those who are not just building but building better for our future,” the Society stated, urging a transition from policy to performance and from construction to conscience.
ASCE Nigeria Section President, Engr. Austin Odibi, described the BSM initiative as a compelling advancement in modern construction. The Society’s Executive Director, Tom Smith, endorsed the technology for global use, including in the United States.
“I commend Julius Berger for the BSM technology. That it is being awarded the Leadership in Sustainable Construction today underscores this fact,” Smith said.
Further validation came from academic research presented at the conference. Dr Abdulmuminu Ahmed Shauibu of Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, shared findings from a case study on the Abuja-Kaduna-Kano highway, concluding that BSM technology offers a sustainable and cost-effective approach to infrastructure development.
He highlighted its cold recycling advantage and reduced environmental impact, stating that reliance on distressed pavement instead of virgin materials mitigates ecosystem degradation.
Accepting the award, Julius Berger’s Director of Administration, Alhaji Abdulaziz Kaita, expressed gratitude for the recognition, emphasising the company’s dedication to innovation in Nigeria’s construction sector.
He noted that BSM technology aligns with Sustainable Development Goals 9 and 13—industry innovation, infrastructure and climate action. “Beyond the BSM technology, Julius Berger has done a lot and is still doing much in the built sector,” he said.
He also underscored the company’s ongoing partnership with Ahmadu Bello University, highlighting a collaborative commitment to expanding research and development in sustainable construction.
Present at the award ceremony alongside Kaita were Julius Berger’s Project Coordinator, Region West, Engr. Fatima Kosemani, and representatives from the company’s Media Relations Office: Mobolaji Ogunyemi, Mercy Akposheri and Emmanuel Isibor.
