Traffic Diversion Begins As Lekki Epe Expressway Repairs Start Sunday

REPAIR WORKS on the Lekki Epe Expressway will begin on Sunday, January 25, 2026, with traffic diversion in place, the Lagos State Government (LASG) has announced.

JKNewsMedia.com reports that the works involve the reconstruction of the Ajah Bridge and the section of the road down to the Admiralty area on the inbound Lagos Lane.

The project was postponed last December after a BusinessDay report raised concerns about the impact of a full road closure and traffic diversion during the yuletide period and Detty December activities.

Confirming the commencement date, the Special Adviser to the Governor on Infrastructure, Olufemi Daramola, said the state government had directed the contractor to move to site.

He stated that rehabilitation works on Sections 2 and 3 of the expressways would last for about 64 days.

“The festivities are over, and the state government has instructed the contractor to move to site to commence work on Sunday,” Daramola said.

He added that intersections would be worked on at night to maintain better traffic flow.

He said the project would follow a traffic management plan, with construction carried out intersection by intersection rather than across the entire corridor at once. Work would take place both day and night to accelerate completion.

The Commissioner for Transportation, Oluwaseun Osiyemi, also said traffic managers would be deployed along the corridor to ensure smooth movement.

He noted that traffic patterns would vary, particularly during peak periods for inbound and outbound vehicles, and that machinery would be in place to prevent congestion.

Osiyemi explained that during the morning peak period between 4.00am and 12.00noon, Lagos bound vehicles would use two lanes while Epe bound vehicles would use one lane.

From 1.00pm to 3.00am, Epe bound motorists would use two lanes while Lagos bound vehicles would use one lane.

He urged motorists to use the Coastal Road as an alternative and confirmed that intersections linking the Coastal Road to other roads would be fixed before Sunday.

Also speaking, the Special Adviser on Transportation, Sola Giwa, said the Lagos bound carriageway would be closed in segments to facilitate construction while maintaining traffic flow.

He said traffic would be diverted to the Epe bound carriageway using a dynamic lane sharing system.

Giwa advised motorists heading towards Lagos to use alternative routes during the construction period, including the Coastal Road from Ogombo via Abraham Adesanya, which avoids the Lekki-Epe Expressway, and another route linking the Coastal Road from Eleganza via Orchid through Lafiaji and Naale Street.
