THE LAGOS State House of Assembly has called upon governors across Nigeria to view state legislatures not merely as extensions of the executive branch but as essential partners in the advancement and prosperity of their respective states.

In commemorating the 2024 International Day of Parliamentarism, celebrated on June 30, the Assembly reaffirmed the critical importance of the legislature as the cornerstone of democracy.

Emphasizing the need for legislative independence, the Assembly urged the National Assembly to enact laws that safeguard against any infringement on parliamentary autonomy.

During the session, Speaker Rt. Hon. Mudashiru Obasa underscored the significance of honoring past speakers for their distinguished service and contributions to Lagos State’s development. He asserted that democracy hinges fundamentally on the effective functioning of legislative bodies, which enact laws and drive governance through motions and resolutions.

Reflecting on the historical role of the Lagos Assembly since its inception in 1979 under the leadership of Alhaji Lateef Jakande, Speaker Obasa lamented the absence of formal recognition for past speakers. He stressed the imperative for governors to empower legislatures to fulfill their constitutional duties effectively.

In a show of solidarity, lawmakers including Hon. Gbolahan Yishawu and Hon. Desmond Elliot highlighted the pivotal role of parliament in bridging the gap between government and the populace. They emphasized that no government can function without a robust legislative arm, which remains indispensable in ensuring democratic governance.

Hon. Sa’ad Olumoh and Hon. Adedamola Richard Kasunmu echoed these sentiments, characterizing parliamentarians as crucial stabilizers of the polity and advocates for the Inter-Parliamentary Union’s involvement.

In closing, the Assembly pledged to continue advocating for legislative empowerment and recognition, reaffirming their commitment to upholding the principles of democracy and parliamentary sovereignty in Lagos State.
