IN A bid to enhance road safety and reduce traffic violations, the Lagos State Government has set specific speed limits across key roads and bridges in the city.
The initiative is reinforced by newly deployed Intelligent Transport System (ITS) sites, equipped with speed cameras and e-police stations, to monitor compliance and enforce penalties.
The Lagos State Ministry of Transportation has outlined the following Speed Limits and Enforcement for major roads:
▪️Third Mainland Bridge – 80 km/h
▪️NITEL, Mobolaji Bank Anthony Way – 60 km/h
▪️Ojota Bridge (by Motorway) – 50 km/h
▪️Lekki-Ikoyi Bridge – 50 km/h to 60 km/h
▪️Allen Avenue Junction – 50 km/h
▪️Nurudeen Olowopopo Road – 60 km/h
▪️Ikorodu Road (Various Locations) – 50 km/h to 60 km/h
▪️Oshodi-Apapa Expressway – 50 km/h to 60 km/h
▪️Epe Expressway – 80 km/h
▪️Murtala Mohammed International Airport Road – 60 km/h
Motorists exceeding these limits will face a fine of ₦50,000, as per the enforcement policy outlined by the Lagos State Government.
Earlier in February, the Lagos State Ministry of Transportation, in collaboration with Huawei Technologies, rolled out ITS sites across the city.
These sites integrate Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) cameras, speed cameras, and other Traffic Management Solution devices to improve law enforcement efficiency.
Commissioner for Transportation, Oluwaseun Osiyemi, stated that the installations complement existing measures and will aid in real-time monitoring of speeding violations and red-light infractions.
“The fine for violating a red light is ₦20,000, while exceeding speed limits attracts a fine of ₦50,000,” Osiyemi confirmed.
“These measures aim to curb reckless driving and enhance road safety in Lagos.”
Also to streamline enforcement, the Vehicle Inspection Service (VIS) will send SMS notifications to motorists caught violating traffic laws. The message will specify the nature of the violation, location, and the corresponding fine.
The system eliminates on-the-spot penalties and enhances transparency in traffic law enforcement.
In addition, some critical areas where speed cameras are operational include:
▪️Third Mainland Bridge – Speed cameras track violations across its span, ensuring compliance on the major route connecting Lagos Mainland to the Island.
▪️Alapere, Ogudu Road – Enforced speed limit of 80 km/h with surveillance in place.
▪️Ojota Bridge (by Motorway) – Lower speed limit (50 km/h) due to high traffic density.
▪️Lekki-Ikoyi Bridge – Monitored traffic flow to enforce speed regulations.
▪️Oshodi-Apapa Expressway & Ikorodu Road – Various speed camera checkpoints deployed to ensure smooth traffic management.
▪️Murtala Mohammed International Airport Road – Cameras placed around the airport terminals to regulate traffic near intersections.

The Lagos State Government has also reiterated its commitment to enforcing road safety and reducing accidents caused by speeding.
It says the introduction of smart traffic solutions aligns with broader efforts to modernise the city’s transportation infrastructure and improve urban mobility.
Motorists are also advised to adhere to the prescribed speed limits to avoid penalties and ensure safer roads for all road users.
