AGREEMENTS BETWEEN the MTN Group and Airtel Africa to share network infrastructure in Uganda and Nigeria aim to enhance digital and financial inclusion across the continent.

The partnership, announced by Airtel in Lagos on Wednesday, will improve network efficiency, expand coverage, and provide better mobile services, particularly for customers in rural and remote areas.

Ralph Mupita, President and CEO of MTN, emphasized the growing demand for data services across Africa, reinforcing the company’s commitment to investing in network capacity.

Sunil Taldar, CEO of Airtel Africa, noted that while telecoms compete in the market, collaborating on infrastructure within regulatory frameworks reduces duplication and fosters digital inclusion.

The companies note that the agreement is part of their wider global trend toward infrastructure sharing, offering more reliable mobile services while managing costs.

Both companies also said they are considering similar ventures in other African countries like Congo-Brazzaville, Rwanda, and Zambia.
