SPRAWLING OPIODS network crumbling under law enforcement pressure led to the seizure of illicit substances worth over N6.7 billion and the arrest of six suspected traffickers in Lagos.

The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) confirmed the haul during a targeted operation at a residential compound in the Isheri area.

Credible intelligence pointed to a significant stockpile of controlled substances in a private estate at 23 Sunny Billa East Street, Bucknor, Isolo.

Officers of a Special Operations Unit of the NDLEA coordinated the operation between Wednesday 19th and Thursday 20th November 2025, acting ahead of the Christmas festive period.

Two members of the suspected drug trafficking organisation, Egbo Innocent Udalor and Chukwe Emmanuel, were trailed and apprehended on Wednesday 19th November at Apple Junction in Festac, Lagos.

The pair were transporting 300 cartons of opioids in a truck when officers intervened, preventing the movement of the illicit consignment.

A follow-up raid at the syndicate’s warehouse the following day resulted in the arrest of the alleged ringleader, Onyekachi Pius Nwanagu, and additional members, including Nwoye Sunday Ali, Nnacho Ogochukwu, and Oraghalia Chukwuebuka Philip.

The NDLEA described the arrests as a critical disruption of the syndicate’s operations.

Authorities recovered a total of 7,272,000 pills of tramadol 225mg, with a street value of N3,960,000,000. Alongside this, 53 million millilitres of codeine syrup, valued at N2,762,550,000, were also seized.

The combined total of the confiscated drugs reached N6,722,550,000 in street value. NDLEA operatives transported the contraband from the residential estate to the agency’s central exhibit complex in Lagos using eleven trucks.

Brig Gen Mohamed Buba Marwa (rtd), NDLEA Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, commended the professionalism of the Special Operations Unit and the Strike Force Unit officers involved.

He described the operation as a decisive setback to the cartels exploiting Nigeria’s youth, highlighting the volume of drugs as a potential driver of addiction and criminal activity.

“This is not just an arrest; it is a clear and unambiguous statement.

The seizure of this colossal volume of illicit drugs, which could have fueled addiction, crime, and insecurity across our nation, represents a victory for the Nigerian people and a confirmation of our unwavering commitment to the mandate given to us by President Bola Tinubu,” Marwa stated.

The NDLEA head further emphasised that the agency’s operations remain focused on the top-level figures controlling the illicit trade. “The days when drug barons thought they were untouchable are over.

The arrest of this drug baron and his criminal cohorts, following an intensive intelligence operation, serves as a stark reminder that the long arm of the law will eventually catch up with every merchant of death, no matter how high or deeply concealed they think they are,” he added.

The agency’s Director of Media & Advocacy, Femi Babafemi, confirmed the operation’s success and the arrests, noting that the seizures represent one of the largest in the current nationwide crackdown on illicit drugs.

The NDLEA underlined that ongoing intelligence-led operations continue to target high-value syndicates, focusing on dismantling both the supply chain and the kingpins orchestrating drug distribution.

NDLEA officials noted that the operation was strategically timed to prevent the sale of large volumes of opioids during the holiday season, a period traditionally exploited by traffickers to maximise distribution.

The Special Operations Unit has been conducting continuous surveillance and coordination with other NDLEA divisions, leading to multiple tactical interventions in the Lagos area.

The agency reiterated its commitment to reducing drug availability across Nigeria, emphasising the significance of intelligence-driven actions to identify warehouses, intercept consignments, and apprehend traffickers.

The arrest of Nwanagu and his associates marks a major step in curbing opioid circulation in the region, according to NDLEA officials.

During the operation, officers employed tracking and surveillance techniques to monitor the movement of the syndicate’s operatives, ensuring successful interception without collateral incidents in the residential area. The seized consignments were securely transferred to NDLEA’s Lagos facility for cataloguing and evidence processing.

Marwa’s statement also highlighted the agency’s dedication to targeting financiers and facilitators of illicit drug activities, underlining the importance of disrupting networks rather than merely apprehending individual couriers.

The NDLEA continues to urge communities to provide tips and intelligence to support nationwide enforcement initiatives.

The arrests and seizures were publicised as part of NDLEA’s ongoing transparency measures, aimed at demonstrating operational successes and reinforcing the agency’s deterrent message to criminal networks.

The agency noted that this particular seizure would have prevented the introduction of millions of addictive pills and bottles of syrup into Lagos communities, potentially averting widespread abuse.

NDLEA officials stressed that the operation reflected high levels of inter-unit coordination and meticulous planning.

The Special Operations Unit and Strike Force Unit executed the raid following days of observation, surveillance, and operational planning, according to Babafemi.

The Lagos raid forms part of a larger national strategy against drug cartels, with similar intelligence-led operations reported in other Nigerian states.

NDLEA spokespeople confirmed that the focus on kingpins remains central to long-term national drug control policy, in line with directives from the agency’s leadership and federal mandates.

NDLEA’s seizure and arrests were announced publicly on Wednesday 26th November 2025 from the agency’s headquarters in Abuja.

The agency reinforced that intelligence and coordination remain critical to preventing the trafficking and distribution of opioids, emphasising the risks posed by unregulated substances to public health and security.

Officials maintained that continued surveillance and intelligence collection will guide future operations, targeting other high-profile offenders and network facilitators across Nigeria.

The NDLEA also assured the public that ongoing enforcement measures aim to dismantle organised drug syndicates systematically, with priority placed on disrupting both urban and regional distribution hubs.
