DEFININF MOMENTUM surged through the media community at the Nigerian Union of Journalists (NUJ) House, Ladi Lawal Press Centre, Ikeja, as a new leadership officially took over the reins of the Nigeria Association of Women Journalists (NAWOJ), Lagos State Chapter.
Veteran broadcaster and respected media figure, Jumoke Faleye Johnson, fondly known as JJ, was elected and inaugurated as chairperson amid resounding support from colleagues and stakeholders.
The executive council, now comprising Anu M. Thomas as secretary, Omolola Olamijulo as treasurer, and Abiola Adaramoye as financial secretary, is tasked with advancing the association’s objectives over the next three years.
Their mandate centres on welfare, empowerment, accountability, and reform.
A statement signed by Secretary Anu M. Thomas affirms the executives’ readiness to build on past milestones and reposition NAWOJ Lagos as a formidable voice for women in journalism.
Jumoke Johnson’s ascension follows a track record built across over two decades of active broadcast journalism.
Her media journey began in 2002 at the Broadcasting Service of Ekiti State (BSES), where she developed her skillset as a presenter and newscaster.
By 2008, upon graduating from university, she had become a seasoned voice in public broadcasting.
She later joined Adaba 88.9 FM, Ondo State’s first private station, contributing extensively as a writer, producer, and presenter.
Her transition to Voice of Nigeria (VON) in 2012 marked a pivotal shift in responsibility and leadership.
At VON, she became Vice Chairperson of the NUJ Chapel in 2017 and broke new ground as the first female Chairperson in 2021.
Re-elected in 2024, she stepped down earlier this year to prepare for her current role.
At her inauguration, Johnson laid out her strategic vision encapsulated in Focus, Action, Mentorship, Empowerment bearing the acronym F.A.M.E.
She stated that her leadership would pursue capacity development, mentorship for young women journalists, policy advocacy, and institutional partnerships.
“I stand on the shoulders of the women who nurtured and mentored me,” she said. “NAWOJ has much work to do, and I am ready to serve with all I have.”

Secretary Anu M. Thomas also brings extensive media engagement, having worked with the Lagos State Government’s communication apparatus.
Treasurer Omolola Olamijulo and Financial Secretary Abiola Adaramoye are both reputed for their professional diligence, with Adaramoye boasting over 18 years in broadcast journalism.
She affirmed her dedication to transparent and accountable financial stewardship.
Outgoing Chairperson Dr. Adeola Akinwunmi Ekine who officially concluded her tenure after six years and two transformative terms, said in her parting address, “I extend appreciation for the collective support I received and called for sustained unity. Leadership is a relay, not a destination.”
She also reaffirmed her enduring commitment to NAWOJ’s mission.

The NAWOJ Lagos banner bearing Jumoke Johnson’s campaign message was displayed during the inauguration.
Colleagues say her assumption of office marks the official commencement of a new executive term for the Lagos Chapter, with responsibilities centred on advancing the welfare and professional interests of women journalists in the state.
